Composition in Two Genres

The first genre of composition is a poster.

Rhetorical situation: College is an exciting time, full of new challenges, and constantly driving you to expand your horizons. In fact, although some of these experiences can be thrilling, most of the experiences are stressful for college students. This kind of stress often causes anxiety and makes people feel overwhelmed. So, finding a healthy way to cope with stress is very important for college students.

Genre: I think it’s very cool to use the poster as my genre because a poster includes visual design, images, and colors. It can attract people’s attention and convey my ideas to the audience in a simple and clear form.

Audience: It is aimed at college students who have stress, but they don’t know how to relieve stress, or they usually use negative methods to deal with stress, such as drinking, smoking, and overeating rather than more positive ways to relieve stress.

Purpose: Its purpose is to make the audience recognize the impact of stress on people. If people can’t effectively control their stress, then their stress will develop into a serious anxiety disorder and depression. It will also have a negative effect on college life on the students. Furthermore, the poster provides the most helpful information which can help to guide students in the right direction to reduce stress.

Stance: When I was making the genre, I used positive colors (like red, orange or yellow) and negative colors (like blue, green, purple) to design my poster because I think warm colors show good suggestions and cold colors show the bad effects from stress. This can form a sharp contrast between them. I believe if students can follow the suggestions from the poster, then they will relieve their stress to some extent.

The second genre of composition is cartoon.

Rhetorical situation: Many people hate Monday because a new week means that you have new work and a lot of things you need to do. Students usually feel that heavy load, and increase stress for themselves. This leads to a downward trend in the state of their emotional well-being and affects their mental health. Therefore, students must change their attitude when they are faced with stress. Otherwise, they will be eroded by the negative effects of stress.

Genre: I think the cartoon is interesting because its concept just includes a few words (like funny and relaxing words) to imply or inspire someone to do something, and it gives a stronger effect to people.

Audience: This main audiences are those students who have a negative attitude towards stress that they may use drugs to relieve stress, as well as students who have negative emotions, high levels of stress, and lack confidence. Due to stress, their well-being is diminished.

Purpose: Its main purpose is to tell students that if you are coping with stress in a positive mindset, then your stress will no longer be a problem. In other words, when your body loves to laugh, it is more effective than any drug to relieve stress because laughing causes the body to produce pleasant chemicals that are released into the bloodstream to relieve stress. (The method of coping with stress is different from the first genre. The first genre pays more attention to external factors to deal with stress, and the second genre pays more attention to the internal factors of people to deal with stress.)

Stance: When I was making my second genre, I found two cartoon characters. They laughed very happily, and it passed on to me. Then I decided to put these two pictures together to form a correspondence which can make the audience feel that laughter helps people to relax their mood. So, I strongly recommend that students who have stress should laugh to cope with stress.
